On the same day that their division rival lost a key player to a torn ACL, the Chargers received the same bad news on one of their starters, as kicker Nate Kaeding will reportedly miss the remainder of the year with a similar injury.

Head coach Norv Turner confirmed Kaeding would be out the rest of the season earlier today. Kaeding tore his ACL trying to tackle Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin during the opening kickoff that he returned 102 yards for a touchdown.

Kaeding is in his eighth season with San Diego and is currently tied with former Colts and Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt for the title of the NFL’s most accurate kicker, making 86.5% of his career attempts.

Punter Mike Scifres filled in admirably for Kaeding yesterday, knocking through a 40 yard field goal, along with several extra point attempts. With Kaeding’s injury confirmed, the Chargers will undoubtedly place him on the injured reserve list, opening up a spot for them to sign a true kicker off the street and send Scifres back to what he does best.
