The Decision Part II is now complete. And unlike LeBron James, the verdict is a stunner.
Choosing to spurn major offers from the league’s largest markets, free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has instead decided to take his talents to South Philly, agreeing to a five year, $60 million contract with the Eagles. $25 million of that is guaranteed.
Asomugha was billed as the best player in this free agency class and all week long the suspense continued to build, culminating in shocking fashion earlier this evening with the announcement that he would be flying high in Philadelphia this fall.
The move leaves the Jets scrambling to re-sign fellow free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who has to feel just a little bit slighted after watching his team throw everything they had at Asomugha, only to come running back to him when they went bust.
As for the Cowboys, instead of feeling elated at the prospects of once again having an elite level cornerback patrolling the field for them, they’re now stuck with the knowledge that they’ll be facing Asomugha twice a season at the very least over the length of the contract. That will sting quite a bit and while Dallas has the wherewithal to go out and get several players to off-set Asomugha’s decision, it won’t be easy to get over what could have been.
