If and when the NFL owners and the players association finally are able to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, free agency should commence immediately, and two of the biggest names on the list of available players are Randy Moss and Plaxico Burress.
Both come with significant baggage, with Moss pushing his way off two teams last season, and Burress only being released from prison in New York on June 6th, but the talent level of both players should make them intriguing options for teams in need of an addition or two at the wide receiver position.
One club that falls into that category is the New York Jets, given the possibility that they could potentially lose Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards to free agency this year. Chances are that they’ll be able to sign one or the other to a new deal, but with one departure the Jets will undoubtedly need to sign a veteran receiver to step into the fold.
That opens the door to either Moss or Burress, and while it would seem that Burress would be a more natural fit given his familiarity with playing in New York, sources within the Jets have made it known that internally their preference leans towards signing Moss over Burress.
Moss spent the better part of four seasons with New England, tormenting the Jets on multiple occasions, and while his skills have clearly diminished over the past year, Moss’ brash personality and motivation issues would likely be negated in the locker room by head coach Rex Ryan. Burress on the other hand presents a much more difficult task, as his criminal record is something the Jets would almost certainly want to avoid.
Either way, a signing of Moss or Burress this season won’t be seen as being anything other than a stop gap measure to temporarily provide New York with a veteran receiving target for quarterback Mark Sanchez to throw to, especially in the red zone.
