Despite having put together one of their better games in recent memory against the Cardinals yesterday, concern is starting to mount in San Diego, after they lost two key players on defense this morning in safety Steve Gregory and linebacker Jyles Tucker.
According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune, Gregory has been handed a four game suspension, after he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Tucker was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn pectoral muscle, ending his season before it really ever started.
That leaves the Chargers in a hole, forcing them to move forward with less depth than they’d like at those positions. While Tucker wasn’t exactly producing much of anything on the stat sheet thus far, the loss of Gregory will hurt immensely, as he had proved himself to be an everydown playmaker in San Diego’s secondary.
The Chargers are expected to utilize rookie Darrell Stuckey and third year safety Paul Oliver in place of Gregory. Neither player has been overly effective in the limited playing time they’ve received this season, but they should be able to provide adequate production given the talent around them.
