Already reeling from back to back losses, the Giants suffered yet another blow earlier today in learning that their top pass rusher, defensive end Matthias Kiwanuka, is slated to miss the next two to three months while he recuperates from a bulging disc in his neck.
Kiwanuka is expected to obtain a second opinion soon, postponing any decision on the part of New York to keep him on their active roster or place him on injured reserve for the time being.
The loss of Kiwanuka, for what will likely amount to the remainder of the regular season, will be a tough blow for the Giants, as he had racked up four sacks in the first three weeks of the season. Minus that effort, New York defenders have notched just two sacks as a whole, making it imperative that the Giants revise their pass rushing strategy or find someone capable of adequately replacing Kiwanuka’s production for the rest of the year.
Trading for someone to fill that role isn’t likely, although it’s possible that the Giants could reach out to the Vikings to inquire on the availability of defensive end Ray Edwards, who will be a free agent at the end of the year and is widely expected to play elsewhere next season.
