Saints to give Carney shot at kicker

After watching the hero of last season’s NFC Championship, Garrett Hartley, miss a chip shot kick that would have won the game for them yesterday afternoon, the Saints have reportedly decided to go back to an old face to get the job done, at least for the time being.

Free agent kicker Matt Stover, who was believed to be on New Orleans short list to replace Hartley, told Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun that he has not been asked to try out, and that he expects former Saints kicker John Carney to be the team’s first choice.

At 46 years old, Carney is a veteran of 21 seasons in the NFL, with seven of those coming in New Orleans. Over his career, Carney has hit 82.4% of his field goal opportunities, scoring 2,044 points in the process.
