If there were any thoughts about LaDainian Tomlinson taking over the starting running back job in Minnesota next season, they should be gone now. Although it’s not yet clear whether the ex-Charger is set to sign with the team yet, the Vikings have been adamant about what role he’d play in if acquired.
With Adrian Peterson still on the roster, L.T. would primarily handle the backup duties, reprising Chester Taylor’s former role with the club over the past three seasons. In spite of Tomlinson’s greater level of experience, head coach Brad Childress believes that role would be just fine.
“I would think he knows that, but I always want to over-communicate clarity so we won’t hopscotch around that [topic].”

When Taylor departed in free agency for the Bears, the running back position immediately became a point of focus for the Vikings, and the services of Tomlinson would surely give them a boost.
Not only does he have impressive career statistics and achievements, but the longtime San Diego player has built up a solid work ethic and has plenty of playoff experience. He is also likely to accept a minor role in an offense, especially at his age.
“It’s going to be this type of role no matter where he goes. If he’s all about being a part of a winner, this is a great spot to be [assuming Brett Favre is back at QB]. He could extend his career as a third-down back if he excels. It makes a lot of sense to me.”
