There’s been plenty of discussion taking place around the league this week, concerning Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and his potential employer(s), and while much of it is speculation at best, the growing sentiment is that McNabb will end up playing for the Raiders next fall.
That said, Oakland fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too high just yet, as McNabb is reportedly refusing to be traded to the Raiders, and will not negotiate a new contract with the club if Philadelphia’s front office pushes the deal through regardless of his wishes. This juicy tidbit of news comes courtesy of the famed gossip crew at TMZ, so take it however you choose.
As of right now, the Eagles are holding out for the best possible trade package, and while there has been some banter back and forth between the Raiders and the Eagles about possibly sending Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to Philadelphia in a trade for McNabb, sources close to the organization believe the trade talks are still open for any team in the league.
In any case, there’s little McNabb could do to prevent a trade to Oakland if the Eagles choose to go that route, as he does not have a no-trade clause in his contract and if he decided not to report to the Raiders after a deal is finalized, he would lose out on his salary for the season.
Theoretically, he could sit out the entire year, enjoying the bevy of cash already doled out to him over the years by the Eagles, and force the Raiders to either franchise him next off-season or release him outright. The likelihood of such an event occurring is slim to none, but it bears keeping in mind, considering McNabb’s desire to play for a legitimate Super Bowl contender next season.
