Mon @ 8:30 pm – Just a quick update… Schefter is now saying the pick sent to Seattle in the deal will be a 2011 selection. It’s not known what round it will be in, but given Wallace’s overall value, it’s doubtful that it will be much more than a fifth at best.
8:05 pm – According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks have dealt backup quarterback Seneca Wallace to to Cleveland for an undisclosed draft pick.
With 11 draft picks, this certainly wasn’t costly for Mike Holmgren to acquire a potential short term answer at quarterback who is familiar with his west coast offense; which to some degree will surely be employed by the Browns next fall.
This trade likely spells the end for Derek Anderson, who has struggled immensely as the starter in Cleveland since signing an extension with the club in 2008, following his breakout campaign the previous season.
Wallace has a fairly decent career stat line that includes 13 starts:
333/556, 59.9%, 3,547 yards, 25 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 83.1 QB rating
There are several teams who would have swapped that production for what they got out of the quarterback position last season, and the Browns are certainly one of them, given the poor play they had from both Quinn and Anderson.
Wallace leaves the Seahawks after an eight year stint as a backup to Matt Hasselbeck. He is certainly an upgrade over the Browns current options and is likely not the last player at the position that Holmgren will add. Look for him to bring someone else in to compete with Wallace in training camp along with Brady Quinn, who could be shipped out himself later on this off-season.
