Over the past two seasons, the Dolphins have held on to the hope that they could make wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. and tight end Anthony Fasano into superstar caliber playmakers. But after a year filled with more downs than ups, Miami could potentially decide to move on from one or both of the players during the off-season.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have not shown any signs of wanting to have Fasano with the team long term and may look to upgrade the position via free agency or the draft if possible. Fasano is currently slated to be an unrestricted free agent this off-season, but without a new collective bargaining agreement, his status would be restricted, and any team wishing to sign him will likely have to part with a draft pick to do so.
That could be both a hindrance for Fasano, depending on how he sees it, as it makes it almost certain that he’ll be back in Miami next season, but the possibility still remains that a team in need of a tight end may come calling and pay him a healthy salary to be the starter in their city. His lack of production for the Dolphins makes that improbable, but it’s still something for the front office crew to think about headed into the off-season.
Miami does have reason to keep Ginn around for at least one or two more seasons, given his relatively low cost salary wise to the team and ability to contribute on special teams. That said, there are several players ahead of him on the depth chart right now that will likely prevent him from receiving significant playing time, unless he can prove to the coaching staff that he is deserving of more looks.
The Dolphins are expected to be in on most of the top receivers in this draft class, although it’s unlikely that they would use their first round selection to upgrade that position. A second or third round pick would be possible though, especially if a talented player somehow slips through the cracks and falls to their spot.
