3:05 pm – Predictably, Schottenheimer is denying the rumors, saying “it’s flattering” but that he doesn’t expect to return any time soon. In response, Mortensen tweeted earlier today that Schottenheimer usually shoots down rumors early on, “but if an owner said right things, he’d listen.”
10:20 am – When the Bills fired head coach Dick Jauron last week, most people expected the team to quietly bide their time, carefully scouring the market to find a solid candidate to take the reins of a team that has underachieved in a big way.
But that hasn’t been the case, as the rumors surrounding their search have spiraled out of control, this time landing on the doorstep of Marty Schottenheimer, who has coached in Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington, and San Diego during his illustrious career. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Bills are seriously considering Schottenheimer right now, and although it’s doubtful that a move to hire him would come quickly, having his name linked to the team definitely raises questions as to what Buffalo is looking for in their new head coach.
Schottenheimer is a solid coach with an impressive track record of success, but given his age (66) and repeated comments that indicate his desire to stay out of the coaching ranks, the Bills may have trouble convincing their fan base that this move will be any different from the last. That said, his reputation alone could be enough to impress team owner Ralph Wilson and general manager Marv Levy, who both come from the old school tradition in the league.
Either way, we’ll know more about Schottenheimer’s position later on today, as he’ll be sitting down with Adam Caplan on Sirius NFL radio to discuss the latest news of the day around the NFL.
