Every so often, we have a bit of sad news to pass along here at NFLNR and unfortunately, this is one of those times.

According to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, Redskins OT Chris Samuels will likely be placed on the injured reserve list soon, ending his 2009 campaign. In and of itself, that’s not always a bad thing, especially if a player is in need of the time to recover from a major injury.

But Samuels’ case is different, as doctor’s discovered a very serious issue after he suffered a neck injury against the Panthers in week four of the season. Samuels’ apparently has a condition in his spine that is causing a narrowing of sorts, and he has been advised that he would likely risk paralysis if he continues his career.

Samuels was the third overall pick by Washington in the 2000 NFL Draft and has been selected to six Pro Bowls in his eight seasons with the Redskins. He is widely considered to be one of the premier offensive tackles in the league, and as such, his loss to Washington’s offense would be profound if his career is indeed finished.

Samuel’s representatives have publicly stated that no decision on his future has been reached, but several sources within the organization have indicated that he has advised the club of his impending retirement at the end of this season.
