If you thought the annual Brett Favre saga was finally put to rest this off-season, think again.
Citing an unnamed source close to the situation, Ed Werder (ESPN.com) is reporting that Favre and Minnesota head coach Brad Childress are scheduled to meet one another sometime later in the week, and will apparently discuss a possible return this season.
The obstacles to Favre’s renouncement of his retirement status are numerous, but certainly not impossible to overcome, if he chooses to in fact return for one more shot at a Super Bowl. His current injury status could prove to be problematic, given the lack of knowledge available on his throwing arm, but Favre’s eventual decision will tell the tale on that, as he has to believe it’s healed if he does come back.
Here’s part of our analysis last week, on a potential return to Minnesota by Favre…
This is a man who cannot let it go. He simply cannot allow himself to leave things undone and until he finally finishes a season on a high note (whatever that may be), he’ll continue to put us through the drama of watching him come back year after year. In Green Bay, his last play was a critical interception, which led him to come back for one more shot in New York, but that ended badly too. His Hall of Fame credentials are just waiting to be stamped, but something inside of him will not let it go… he has to keep trying to find that perfect ending to his storybook career.
That’s where Minnesota comes into the picture. They need a quarterback… wait scratch that. They need a REAL quarterback. Yeah they’ve got a few scrubs laying about right now that can say they play the position, but they’re about as legit as Vanilla Ice’s rock career. Those guys are nothing compared to Favre and unfortunately for the Vikings, a REAL quarterback is the only thing separating them from a Super Bowl at this point.
They’ve got the shutdown defense every team wants, a superstar running back that can carry the team, and a plethora of talent to catch the ball. All they need is someone to step into the huddle and make it happen. Tavaris Jackson isn’t going to cut it. Sage Rosenfels won’t either. But Brett Favre… well that’s a different story alltogether.
Favre is a throwback… a regular gunslinger at quarterback, who is not afraid to take his shots when he sees them. Yes he makes mistakes, as evidenced by his abrupt departure from the postseason discussion the past two seasons, but the bottom line is that he’s a winner, wherever he goes. He has the swagger, the chutzpah if you will, that a starting quarterback in the NFL has to have to be successful. Jackson and Rosenfels don’t have it… Favre does. And the Vikings need it in a bad way this season.
If the Vikings can convince Favre to end his short retirement, they should be widely considered the prohibitive favorites to win the Super Bowl, given the level of talent currently amassed in Minnesota. Their lack of a quality quarterback has prevented them from succeeding in the past few seasons, but with Adrian Peterson at RB and now Percy Harvin added to the WR corps, they definitely have no lack of offensive firepower.
It’s doubtful that any decision will come about soon, as the two sides will likely have much to discuss, and Favre will take a fair amount of time as usual to make his final thoughts on the matter known. That being said, we’ll do our best to keep you up to date as news progresses, so keep it locked right here all week long.
