3:36 pm: Apparently, the Falcons have already reached an agreement with Gonzalez on a new contract. Terms have not been announced, but it’s likely to keep him in Atlanta for the next four seasons at the very least. Gonzalez also released a statement on the trade:
“It’s somewhat bittersweet,” Gonzalez told FOXSports.com. “I love Kansas City. I grew up in Kansas City. The city means a lot to me. I got there when I turned 21. It will be sad to leave a city I love.”
“But I’m looking forward to making a Super Bowl run in Atlanta every year for the next three or four years. With Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and now myself, we have the chance to be in the top five in the league in offense every year. How could I not be excited to join that team?”
3:00 pm: It’s not yet official, but so far it seems that it’s the 2010 2nd round pick and nothing else. We’ll keep an eye on things though to see if anything new comes up. In the meantime, the Chiefs have released statements from team owner Clark Hunt and general manager Scott Pioli:
“On behalf of my family and the Chiefs, I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. “Over the last 12 seasons, Tony has been one of the finest players in Chiefs history, and he will always be remembered as a member of the Chiefs. His play on the field speaks for itself — he holds almost every major NFL record for tight ends, and he is arguably the best to ever play his position. We wish him the best in Atlanta.”
“From an organizational as well as personal standpoint there are mixed emotions,” new Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said in the team’s statement. “I have the highest personal and professional respect for Tony and consider him to be a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.”
2:40 pm: According to Jay Glazer (FoxSports.com), the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta in exchange for the Falcons 2nd round pick in 2010 draft. No additional details have been reported on the deal.
If this is true, it’s going to be tough for Chiefs fans to stomach this trade, as they will not receive any compensation this season for one of the most beloved players on the team. We’ll have more as it develops.
