Playing cornerback in the NFL is one of the more difficult things to do in sports, and no one knows that better than Philip Buchanon.
Drafted in the first round by the Raiders, Buchanon struggled mightily for several seasons, before he was cut loose by the team and bounced around the league looking for work. Buchanon finally settled somewhat with Tampa Bay, finding a niche of sorts in the Bucs Cover 2 defense, but after Tampa chose to not offer him a sizable contract this off-season, he went looking for it someplace else.
Unfortunately, Buchanon won’t be receiving a major payday anytime soon, but he did land himself a new job today, signing with the Detroit Lions for two seasons and $8.5 million. If he plays well with the league’s worst team, expect him to pick up a lot more money very soon.
In other news, former Bills CB Jabari Greer found himself the recipient of a major payday this evening, finalizing a contract with the Saints that will pay him $23 million over four seasons in the Big Easy.
Greer could struggle early on in New Orleans having to play a more aggressive style of coverage under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, but the move does give the Saints extra flexibility with their draft picks this April.
