Update – The Browns are disputing the Boston Herald report that claimed Pioli had been given a deadline by Cleveland owner Randy Lerner. In an article released today by the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, a source close to the negotiations reported that the previously reported time table was erroneous and that Pioli fully intended to interview with other teams about their GM openings, including the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the Boston Herald is reporting that Patriots Assistant General Manager Scott Pioli has been given a deadline of today to either accept or decline the Browns lucrative proposal to assume total control in Cleveland.
Once the Browns dumped their general manager, Phil Savage, along with their head coach Romeo Crennel last Monday, speculation has been rampant that Cleveland was intent on replicating the Patriots dominance by bringing in Pioli, who has been widely held as one of the league’s top front office execs.
We’ll keep an eye out for any news that comes down the pike, although I doubt any deal will be finalized in any case today, given the holiday and the fact that Pioli will want to take a look at any other possible opportunities before making a decision.
